Can Marca Coves

beautiful ibiza's coves

After following a path cut out of the rock, one reaches the entrance of the cave, at a level of 12/14 meters above sea level, which is the starting point of the visit.
The cave is over 100.000 years old. It has formed itself through telluric faults, and has suffered ice ages and tropical heat waves. Actually, it is almost fossilized, except for the deepest galleries, where the rain filtrations still form impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

The cavern named Can Marça had first been discovered by smugglers who used it for hiding their goods, hoisting them from an opening at a height of 8/10 meters above the sea. Today we can still see clearly the black and red marks they painted to signpost another way out in case of emergency.

The geological formations show the numerous underground water courses – today, waterfalls and waterbeds are fossilized.

The rock material and minerals to be found inside the  cave are basically carbonate of lime, iron oxide, clay, magnesium, etc.

The contribution of the geologists and speleologists who participated in the conversion of the Cave solely consisted in reproducing what existed in remote times, recuperating the waterfalls and the water courses.

They found inside the cave, fossilized bones from extinguished species of rodent whose skeletons have been sent to the Natural History Museum to be classified and to enrich the prehistoric fauna collection of our ancient Mediterranean lands
