The library of Ibiza elected Baltacer Porcel as writer of the month
Thanks to the “Cultura del Govern balear`s” project “L`escriptor de l`any” that’s focused on the recognition of the work of Balearic writers, the library of Ibiza dedicates the month of June to the writer Baltacer Porcel, who’s very connected with Balearic islands and who wrote some works about it.
Baltasar Porcel y Pujol (Andratx, Mallorca, 1937) is one of the greatest writers of catalane literature. He usually writes novels, but anyway the range of his styles and documents is really wide. He writes as well theatre plays, travel guides etc. Baltasar Porcel did also a great career in La Vanguardia and in other newspapers.
He moved to Palma when he was 17 years old. There he started to participate on literary meetings and became friends with Llorenç Villalonga. Later in Barcelona, he met Jordi Pujol before he became a director of the Generalitat de Catalunya with who had a long friendship as well. Thanks to the collaboration with magazines such as Destino or Serra D`or he had an opportunity to meet and to interview a lot of important people of a political, social and cultural life of Catalonia, Balearic and Spain.
After some his works being published and some of those being rewarded, in 1975 he wrote “Caballos hacia la noche” that`s consider to be his the greatest novel.
In 1999 he was rewarded with Boccaccio Prize in Italy and in 2000 left a presidency of Institut Català de la Mediterrània.
In 2007 received the Premi d’Honor by Letres Catalanes. Concerning his work, we can mention novels such as Els argonautes (Los argonautas, 1968), Les pomes d’or (Las manzanas de oro, 1980) y Les primaveres i les tardors (Las primaveras y los otoños, 1986), El divorcio de Berta Barca (1989) y Lola: els peixos morts (Lola y los peces muertos, 1994), Mediterráneo y Tumultos del oleaje (1996), a compilation of fairy tales El misteri de l’alzinar (El misterio del encinar, 1986), some theatre plays Les illes encantades (Las islas encantadas), 1984) and Els dolços murmuris de la mar (Los dulces murmullos del mar, 1988).
